Irmo is served by School District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties. Typical of the district’s quality is Ballentine Elementary School where two educators have been named Teachers of the Year, a statewide honor. The prestigious U.S. News & World Report rankings placed Irmo’s Dutch Fork High School in the top 1000 of over 21,000 high schools nationwide, as well as fifth in South Carolina. With rigorous college preparation and a well-rounded curriculum including sports, music and arts, Dutch Fork High is one of the brightest spots in town. Another is Irmo High School, where a prizewinning band is breaking records and students participate in national programs such as Boys State and JROTC.

One of the most innovative schools in the area is the Alternative Academy for Success in nearby Chapin, which takes students at any level from PreK through high school. This is a smaller, structured learning community where students who may be at risk or facing unusual stress receive personal attention and adhere to strict guidelines on dress, punctuality, and conduct. The University of South Carolina, the state’s largest and most prestigious public university, is only thirty minutes away in Columbia.
